Paul Andrew Hayes: Drawing from Another Dimension

Curator. San Francisco Arts Commission Galleries: Grove St. Window Instlallation Site. May – July 2008

For Drawing from Another Dimension, Hayes continues to further develop a concept that he has been exploring for the past few years—representing the qualities inherent to drawing in three dimensional space through line, form and mass. The result is reminiscent of a cluster of molecules, a flock of birds or any aggregation that is made up of small seeminglyidentical parts. The site-specific installation for the Grove Street window installation site will consist of a vast cascade of crumpled and folded pieces of paper suspended on strands of wire that extend beyond the project space and into the rear of the building.

In his artist statement Hayes states, "I'd like to give people a completely new experience of the existing architecture. As inspiration for a piece I can begin with a certain experience of the natural world (for example, what it feels like to sit beneath a tree and see the way sunlight filters through) and design it further or use an aspect of it to make something I've never seen before."

Despite using simple typing paper the work embodies natural beauty through sequence and form. While the material represents the omnipresent bureaucracy of our modern world, the way it is used suggests an alternative to it.
